Diversity and Inclusion are cornerstones of our corporate values: creative, open responsible, and entrepreneurial. BASF’s Diversity and Inclusion programs foster an inclusive workplace encouraging real engagement among all our employees. It helps us delivering our aspiration to be the leading chemical company for our customers. BASF is involved in various regional and international networks as well as (partner) organizations, initiatives, and associations. Our goal is to not just talk the talk but walk the walk of a diverse and inclusive workplace. In 2020, BASF reaffirmed its active commitment to the UN Global Compact (UNGC) at the occasion of the UN General Assembly. On September 2021, BASF has been announced as a Global Compact LEAD company for its ongoing engagement in the UNGC, as well as for its “Ten Principles for Responsible Business”.

We want to contribute to a world that provides a viable future with enhanced quality of life for everyone. By creating chemistry we do so and make the best use of available resources. We measure the overall impact of economic, environmental, and social aspects with the “Value to Society” methodology to optimize our contribution towards a sustainable future. Furthermore, we support the United Nations in the implementation of the “UN Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs), and are committed to the “Paris Climate Agreement”. Climate change is the biggest challenge of our time, thus we aim to achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. To achieve this, we become more efficient in our production and energy usage, we will increase our use of renewable energies and we will accelerate the development and deployment of new CO2-free processes for the production of chemicals. Our goal is to make value measurable. In this way, the “Value-to-Society” approach is a first step towards a better future.

Learning and development are essential success factors for a strong and future-oriented company culture. The skills and competencies of our employees are critical for profitable growth and ongoing success. For this reason, we want to further modernize our learning culture and step up our efforts to promote continuous, self-directed learning, as well as learning from others. At BASF, development opportunities are open to all employees, equally. We understand development as continuous learning by building individual experience and skills, further training or changing jobs. A trust-based relationship between employees and leaders as well as regular feedback are crucial to employee development. We use “Continuous Meaningful Conversations” between employees and leaders to cover topics like feedback, reflection, development, performance, collaboration, as well as well-being to ensure a highly individual employee development. These conversations can be initiated by both leaders or employees and take different forms depending on individual needs – leaders and employees can agree on this in the annual employee dialog.

Our identity as an employer includes our belief in supporting our employees in balancing their personal and professional life. We want to strengthen our employee’s identification towards the company and our position in the global competition for qualified personnel. Therefore, we offer a big variety of opportunities for our employees to stick to the growing demand of flexibility concerning time and location, as far as their job allows. These include flexible working hours, part-time employment, remote working, and time-off options that provide the necessary flexibility to care for children or family members, for example. We are continually working to expand these options and increasingly support the effective use of digital solutions here. We have formulated guidelines for more flexibility in where, when and how employees can work. These opportunities have become an integral part of our employees’ day-to-day work, job permitting.

As part of our sustainability commitment, BASF’s societal engagement contributes to the solution of relevant societal challenges for communities surrounding our sites and vulnerable communities worldwide. We regard societal engagement as an investment into the shared value for societies, the environment and business alike. Our activities are bundled in three main topics for a sustainable future: health, skills, and resources. We base our societal commitment globally at all levels of the BASF Group on these focal points and invest financial contributions, expertise, time as well as the joint development of alternative local business models.
