Natural Gas, Light Crude Oil & NGLs
Extensive infrastructure and operatorship
Canadian Natural has developed expertise in mature-basin development from years of experience in developing light crude oil and conventional natural gas. The Company’s natural gas, light crude oil and NGL land base is extensive and represents one of the largest land positions in western Canada, with exposure to liquids-rich natural gas and light crude oil play types, including the Montney and Deep Basin. Canadian Natural has an extensive network of owned and operated facilities and infrastructure that provides a competitive advantage and supports top tier effective and efficient operations.
Large, Canadian natural gas producer
Canadian Natural is a large producer of natural gas in Canada with a vast land base, significant owned and operated infrastructure and a deep inventory of drill to fill opportunities. By utilizing our expertise, supported by effective and efficient operations, we have the competitive advantage to maximize value.
The Company’s exploration strategy focuses on comprehensive geological and geophysical evaluation using mostly 3D seismic augmented with 2D data. Strategically we target the technically strongest and most robust economic prospects / program areas which are generally close to existing infrastructure. The major exploration growth plays we are pursuing are the liquids-rich natural gas and light crude oil in the Montney, Duvernay and Deep Basin.
The Montney, Duvernay and Deep Basin plays extend throughout northwest Alberta and into northeast British Columbia where the Company has significant land base rights – one of the largest amongst our peers.
Low-risk, reliable production
Canadian Natural is the largest producer of heavy crude oil in Canada with a competitive advantage through its vast land base, which allows for large scale drilling and development programs, while minimizing capital cost requirements. Costs are further managed through owning and operating centralized treating and sand handling facilities, maximizing their utilization and achieving economies of scale.
Primary Heavy Crude Oil
Canadian Natural’s primary heavy crude oil operations are centered on the Alberta-Saskatchewan border, near Bonnyville and Lloydminster. The Company’s extensive and dominant land base allows us to conduct effective and efficient drilling and development programs while minimizing our capital cost requirements. Costs are further managed through owning and operating centralized treating and sand handling facilities, maximizing their utilization and using our size to achieve economies of scale. Our infrastructure includes crude oil processing facilities, salt caverns for solids disposal and 100% ownership of the ECHO sales pipeline allows us to deliver undiluted heavy crude oil into our blending facilities at Hardisty, Alberta.
Our infrastructure and size gives us a significant competitive advantage in this area and our large inventory of drilling prospects leads to greater flexibility enabling us to react very quickly to changes in commodity prices or changes in capital allocation.
Primary production through Cold Heavy Oil Production with Sand (CHOPS) typically recovers between
5% and 15% of the original oil in place, leaving a vast unrecovered resource that we feel will ultimately be developed through advances in technology. The Company is able to access additional resource through enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques such as horizontal multilateral drilling, which is the primary method of development today. Improving recovery by drilling infill wells in some pools, testing water flooding in others, and using horizontal and multilateral wells for specific applications are a few of the ways we are improving recovery factors.
Pelican Lake Crude Oil
Pelican Lake is a world class asset within Canadian Natural’s portfolio. Pelican Lake is a large, shallow, contiguous medium crude oil pool in our Northern Plains core region. Although initially developed with primary production, portions of the field were converted to waterflood in 2004, resulting in a significant production increase which reversed the previous three years of production decline. Building on that success, we began testing polymer flooding in 2005. This enhanced oil recovery technique has proven to be much more effective than water flooding and as such, we converted more of the field to polymer flood. In late 2017, the Company added to its strategic position at this world class pool with the purchase of certain Pelican Lake assets capturing synergies in servicing and facility operations, as well as area management.
Polymer is a non-toxic chemical powder that we mix with water to create an injectable solution that has a viscosity similar to olive oil. The application of the polymer flood increases oil recovery since the thicker polymer solution improves sweep efficiency and reduces bypassed oil in the reservoir. Polymer flooding has the potential to increase ultimate recovery to approximately 28% of the original oil in place at a relatively low cost.
Since converting from primary production to the polymer flood requires us to re-pressurize the reservoir with the polymer solution, the full response from the polymer flood is typically seen 9 to 24 months from injection. As in any waterflood, optimizing water handling is key to the process – polymer flooding is no different.
Oil Sands
Canadian Natural owns and operates significant long life low decline world class oil sands assets. As the basis for the Company’s substantial free cash flow generation, Canadian Natural remains focused on maximizing value through continuous improvement and adoption of technology to deliver safe, steady, reliable oil sands production.
Thermal In Situ
Canadian Natural holds some of the best thermal in situ oil sands assets in Canada, providing long life low decline assets with tremendous value and growth potential. Our thermal assets are located in two of the major oil sands deposits in western Canada, the Athabasca and the Cold Lake deposits. Canadian Natural’s oil sands deposits are in the form of bitumen, which in its natural state is too viscous to flow. When bitumen is too deep (>75 m) to economically mine, steam is injected to warm the bitumen, reducing viscosity and allowing it to be pumped through surface wells. Approximately 3.4% of Canada’s oil sands can be mined, the majority can be recovered using thermal in situ recovery.
Primrose & Wolf Lake
In the Cold Lake region, our Primrose operations currently produce bitumen from the Clearwater reservoir using the cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) process into facilities with approximately 140,000 bbl/d of production capacity. CSS uses a single well bore to inject and produce steam. This technology has been historically applied to reservoirs that have barriers to vertical flow. The production peaks and troughs at Primrose are a reflection of the cyclic steam process – the peaks are associated with production cycles from newer, less mature wells and the troughs are associated with production cycles from the more mature areas in the field.
Subsequent to several cycles of CSS production, the Clearwater reservoir is well structured for the steam flood follow-up process. Steam flood utilizes existing production wells as low pressure steam injection sites, with existing producing wells pumping heavy crude oil to the surface, similar to SAGD. The Company deploys this technology throughout its mature CSS wells at the Company’s Primrose operations.
The Company has a solvent assisted steam flood pilot in the Primrose steam flood area where it began solvent injection in late 2021 and continues to monitor and optimize solvent efficiency and commerciality.
Kirby & Jackfish
Within the Athabasca deposits of the Kirby and Jackfish operations, our primary target is the McMurray reservoir and Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) is the recovery process of choice. SAGD uses two well bores, one for continuous steaming and the other for continuous production. The Company has 100% interest in these assets with current total facility capacity of 200,000 bbl/d, where economies of scale allow Canadian Natural to drive lower operating costs and top tier capital efficiencies.
Kirby
The Kirby project is located approximately 85 km northeast of Lac La Biche and is comprised of Kirby South and Kirby North central processing facilities with total productive capacity of approximately
80,000 bbl/d.
Canadian Natural commenced steam injection at the Kirby South Phase 1 project in September 2013, the first project the Company undertook in the Athabasca Oil Sands area. The project targets the McMurray reservoir and uses SAGD technology for the recovery of bitumen from the long life low decline in situ oil sands resources.
In late 2017, the Company reinitiated its 40,000 bbl/d Kirby North project for construction and drilling and achieved first oil in Q2/19.
Future Developments
Beyond the Company’s mid-term growth targets, Canadian Natural has a large opportunity set within its high quality thermal in situ resource base for a multi-year thermal development program in a cost-effective and disciplined manner. Within the Athabasca region, the majority of our assets are in the planning stages, which include Grouse, Ipiatik, Gregoire and Leismer.
