Saudi Aramco is the state-owned oil company of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and a fully integrated, global petroleum and chemicals enterprise. Over the past 80 years, we have become a world leader in hydrocarbon exploration, production, refining, distribution, and marketing. Saudi Aramco’s oil and gas production infrastructure leads the industry in scale of production, operational reliability, and technical advances.

In addition to refining, Saudi Aramco has ventured into petrochemicals, producing a variety of products like plastics, fertilizers, and chemicals through its subsidiary, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC). The acquisition of a 70% stake in SABIC in 2020 was a significant move towards diversifying its revenue stream beyond crude oil.

Saudi Aramco invests heavily in research and development (R&D), focusing on new technologies to improve oil recovery, reduce environmental impact, and explore alternative energy sources. It operates several R&D centers worldwide, including in the United States, Europe, and Asia, where engineers and scientists work on innovations in fields such as nanotechnology, carbon capture, and renewable energy.

Sustainability and Environmental Initiatives

Despite being primarily an oil and gas company, Saudi Aramco is increasingly focusing on sustainability and environmental responsibility. The company has launched several initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint and support global efforts to combat climate change. These include:
  • Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS): Saudi Aramco is a pioneer in carbon capture technologies, which involve capturing carbon dioxide emissions from industrial processes and storing them underground to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Methane Emissions Reduction: The company has implemented programs to minimize methane emissions from its operations. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and Aramco aims to reduce emissions by upgrading its facilities and adopting best practices in gas flaring and venting.
  • Renewable Energy Investments: While oil remains its core business, Saudi Aramco is investing in renewable energy, particularly solar and wind projects, to diversify its energy portfolio. This aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, a strategic plan to reduce the Kingdom’s reliance on oil and shift towards a more sustainable and diversified economy.
  • Circular Carbon Economy: Aramco supports the circular carbon economy model, which focuses on reducing, reusing, recycling, and removing carbon emissions to achieve environmental sustainability.

Initial Public Offering (IPO)

One of the most significant events in the company’s recent history was its initial public offering (IPO) in December 2019. The Saudi government decided to list a small portion of Saudi Aramco’s shares on the domestic stock exchange, the Tadawul, as part of its broader plan to diversify the country’s economy under Vision 2030. The IPO raised $25.6 billion, making it the largest in history, and valued the company at around $1.7 trillion. The proceeds from the IPO are intended to be used for the Kingdom’s economic diversification efforts, including investments in infrastructure, technology, and non-oil industries.

Global Influence and Partnerships

Saudi Aramco has established partnerships and joint ventures with several leading global companies in the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries. These include collaborations with companies such as Royal Dutch Shell, TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil, and Sinopec. These partnerships not only help Aramco strengthen its global footprint but also facilitate the transfer of technology and expertise to enhance its operations.

Vision 2030 and the Future

Saudi Aramco is central to the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, a long-term economic development plan aimed at reducing Saudi Arabia’s dependence on oil. As part of this vision, the company is focusing on diversifying its business portfolio, investing in renewable energy, and developing its natural gas sector. Saudi Aramco Careers

Aramco is also positioning itself as a leader in new energy technologies such as hydrogen, which is seen as a key energy source for the future. The company is working on projects to develop and export “blue hydrogen,” produced from natural gas with carbon capture.

Challenges and Criticisms

Despite its global success, Saudi Aramco faces several challenges and criticisms. The company is highly dependent on oil revenues, making it vulnerable to fluctuations in oil prices. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly in the Persian Gulf, also pose risks to its operations.

Additionally, Aramco has been criticized by environmental groups for its role in contributing to global carbon emissions. As the world shifts towards renewable energy, Aramco faces pressure to transition away from fossil fuels and invest more in clean energy solutions.

Apprenticeship program

Apprenticeship opportunities for Saudi high school graduates.

The Apprenticeship Program (APNE) is designed to provide training to Saudi high school graduates to prepare them for entry-level jobs with Saudi Aramco. The program provides participants with academic and job skills training to ensure that they have the skills necessary to be successful in their future jobs.

The job skills training depends on which job track the participant is following. While studying in the program, participants work with a range of skilled academic teachers and job skills trainers who provide the assistance and support needed to prepare participants for their career with Saudi Aramco.

The Apprenticeship Program's main focus is to provide training for participants so that they can be successful on the job, but ample opportunity also exists for participants to learn and develop a range of other skills. Many of the industrial training centers (ITCs) offer club activities that apprentices can join depending on their interests. For example, the Speak-Up Club at Dhahran North ITC helps students to develop their public speaking and leadership skills in addition to helping them increase their self-confidence. There are also opportunities to keep physically fit in the ITCs' sports facilities and to join sports teams, including football and basketball.

College degree program

College scholarships for Saudi high school graduates.

The College Degree Program (CDPNE) is a highly-selective scholarship program for Saudi male and female high school graduates.

It is one of the Aramco's primary sources for entry-level Saudi professionals. Each year, Aramco selects outstanding Saudi high school graduates from the General path, Computer Science & Engineering path, or Health & Life Science path to be sponsored to study for a bachelor's degree in a discipline required by the company, after fulfillment of all admission requirements.

After sitting a screening test and fulfilling all admission requirements, the accepted candidates join the College Preparatory Program (CPP) for a full academic year in Dhahran before commencing their scholarship.

After successful completion of Aramco's CPP in Dhahran, students are sponsored to attend an out-of-Kingdom university in their assigned field of study. Following successful completion of their bachelor's degree program, students are targeted for employment at the professional level with Aramco.

Students are provided with a high level of support to ensure that they achieve their program goals. During the CPP, students receive support from the College Preparatory Center (CPC) staff to ensure that they are prepared for the challenges of enrolling in a top-tier university. Aramco’s CPP includes preparation for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and assistance with university applications. The rigorous and intensive academic program offered in the CPC ensures that students are ready to meet the academic challenges that they will face once they begin their university studies. The support offered to program participants does not stop once they leave the Kingdom. Aramco counselors, located in many of the countries where CDPNE students study, provide students with any required assistance while they are working to achieve their academic goals.
